2024 Exclusive Sneak Peek: Tyler Nubin, S, Minnesota

Welcome to the Exclusive Sneak Peek: Tyler Nubin, a safety out of Minnesota. He is from Saint Charles, Illinois and was a 3-star recruit from St. Charles High School.

Nubin began his five-year NCAA journey as a freshman in 2109 at Minnesota. He appeared in 5 games and totalled 4 solo tackles, 2 assists and 2 passes defended in his limited playing time.

In 2020 as a sophomore he saw his playing time increase marginally when in 7 games he totalled 30 solo tackles, 11 assists, 0.5 tackles for loss, 1 interception and 1 forced fumble. A dramatic increase from his freshman stats with only a limited increase in playing time.

That increase in production led to him being a full-time starter for the first time as a junior in 2021. In his first full-time role, he racked up 38 solo tackles, 14 assists, 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack, 3 interceptions and 2 passes defended. He proved very quickly that he deserved his newfound playing time and was excelling at the position.

He followed his solid junior season up with back-to-back solid seasons as a 4th and 5th-year senior where he totalled at least 34 solo tackles, 18 assists, 1 tackle for loss, 4 interceptions, 3 passes defended, 1 fumble recovered and 1 fumble forced in both seasons. Nubin proved in his time as a starter that he was as solid and reliable as they come.

Scouting Reports

Strengths

  • Has great straight-line speed and the ability to keep up with most receivers deep.
  • Possesses great pre-snap awareness and the ability to make adjustments on the fly.
  • Tracks the ball in the air at an elite level and makes plays on it like a receiver.
  • Has excellent versatility in both coverage and when in the box.

Weaknesses

  • He often goes for the big hit and leaves himself vulnerable to missed tackles.
  • Can take too many risks and often relies on his speed to make up for failed risks.
  • Struggles to match up with the biggest and fastest receivers and is frequently outmatched by them.
  • He struggles when forced to backpedal and often puts in awkward steps when trying to transition out of the backpedal.

Pre-Draft Analysis

Expected Draft Capital: Late 1st Round

Ideal Landing Spot: Detroit Lions

The Lions surprised the NFL this season with how much they had improved overall. One spot they hadn’t improved was in the secondary. The Lions were among the league’s worst in points allowed and are in desperate need of a star on the back end of the defence.

Nubin is very much like Kamren Kinchens for me, in the sense that he is projected to go in the second round but would fit very nicely with the Lions should they choose to take him at the end of the first round.

As with Kinchens, if the Lions pass on Nubins, there will be no shortage of teams interested in selecting him in the early to mid-second round.
