Coaching matters. Not just head coaching but the staff they build around them. We already broke down the six head coaching hires and their impact. Now we take a quick look at the other coaching moves this offseason in our coaching roundup. From offensive coordinators to passing game gurus and in between. All these coaches can have impact on their new teams and the players we count on for fantasy football.
Coaching Roundup
Josh Grizzard: Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Offensive Coordinator
This is an internal hire. It seems the Tampa Bay Buccaneers want to keep the offense continuity going after losing their OC for the second straight year. Josh Grizzard has nine years of NFL coaching experience, mostly with the Miami Dolphins. His hire should maintain the fantasy value of all Bucs players. Baker Mayfield has excelled in this offense, and the previous change of offensive coordinator hasn’t stopped that. Grizzard should continue developing wide receiver Jalen McMillian. Grizzard has spent time as a wide receiver coach and as a passing game coach.
John Morton: Detroit Lions- Offensive Coordinator
Not technically an internal hire, but John Morton is no stranger to the Detroit Lions and head coach Dan Campbell. Morton was with the team in 2022 as a senior offensive assistant. He and Campbell spent time together on the New Orleans Saints coaching staff in 2016. Given all the other coaches leaving the Lions, it makes sense that Campbell brought in someone familiar with his system and the culture he has built there. Morton should continue the work Ben Johnson started but perhaps be more conservative in his play-calling. The Lions’ skill positions should repeat the fantasy performances we have grown accustomed to.
Declan Doyle: Chicago Bears- Offensive Coordinator
Press Taylor: Chicago Bears- Passing Game Coordinator
A new unproven head coach and a new unproven offensive coordinator. I expected Ben Johnson and the Bears to bring in someone with a longer resume but instead, they hired Declan Doyle. Doyle only has six years of NFL coaching history. He was previously an offensive assistant and tight ends coach. His experience as a tight end coach along with Johnson’s scheme that highlights the tight end. This should mean Cole Kmet is a buy for 2025. Doyle won’t be calling the plays in Chicago but could mature into that role if the offense starts to click.
Having Press Taylor on the staff should help Caleb Williams be better. Taylor was a big part of developing Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts, and Trevor Lawrence. On a team that is light on experience in the coaching realm, Taylor brings the pedigree and history to the Bears. He should have an impact on this Bears team.
Josh McDaniels: New England Patriots- Offensive Coordinator
Time is a flat circle or something like that. Josh McDaniels is back as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. A position he held from 2006-2008 and again from 2012 to 2021. This time he will be under another Patriots legend Mike Vrabel. Given both of their histories, this feels like a reboot that never lives up to the previous version. I do think this helps Drake Maye’s development which was a big question with the Vrabel hire. Adding another skill player will help which should be done in the NFL draft. McDaniels was once considered an innovator with his play calling but he may now be behind the times. If he can recapture what he once was the Patriots will be sleepers across the board for fantasy managers.
Tommy Rees: Cleveland Browns- Offensive Coordinator
What to say about the Tommy Rees hiring. As an internal hire you hope it keeps some sort of continuity. He only joined the team last year. It was not a good year for the Browns at all. Sure you could put that on injuries but the offense as a whole was subpar. Can Rees come in and make changes in an elevated role? That will be the big question. The biggest winner here is David Njoku who Rees coached up as tight ends coach last season. There are big questions at the quarterback situation. Rees’s experience as a quarterback coach and playing the position himself gives hope to Browns fans and fantasy managers hoping Jerry Jeudy can repeat as a fantasy darling.
Tanner Engstrand: New York Jets – Offensive Coordinator
The Jets hired a defensive-minded head coach in Aaron Glenn so it makes sense to hire an offensive coordinator who not only knows Glenn but was part of one of the better offenses in the past few years. Tanner Engstrand comes from the Detroit Lions to the New York Jets and looks to bring that high-powered offense with him. I like this move for Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson. They can be the Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St Brown of this offense. It will be Engstrand’s first time calling plays and will have to get the ball in his play makers hands with what appears to be a rookie quarterback coming in.
Klint Kubiak: Seattle Seahawks- Offensive Coordinator
This marks Klint Kubiak’s fifth team in five years. After spending last season as the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints he brings his talents to the Pacific Northwest. Looking at what Kubiak did in New Orleans I expect Jaxon Smith- Njigba to vault into the upper echelon of wide receivers. He will get the Chris Olave treatment. I do worry about the fact that Kubiak has bounced around for the past five years and yet to secure a head coaching role or even stick with a team.
Grant Udinski: Jacksonville Jaguars- Offensive Coordinator
Shane Waldron: Jacksonville Jaguars- Passing game Coordinator
The Jacksonville Jaguars are doubling down on the development of not only Trevor Lawrence but also the passing game. With Grant Udinski in as offensive coordinator they are trying to replicate two massive offenses. Udinski comes from the Minnesota Vikings where he spent the past three season working as a quarterback coach and learning from Kevin O’Connell. Head coach Liam Coen will be calling plays but Udinski provides a solid sounding board on how to develop and scheme to get the most out of the offense. Given that the Jags have invested heavily in the skill positions the past few years they need to start clicking. Brian Thomas Jr was a standout his rookie year. An increase to the over all offense only helps him continue to be a stand out for fantasy football.
Every fantasy manager has to be hoping that Shane Waldron doesn’t ruin Lawrence and Thomas. After some failed experiences in Chicago and Seattle he now finds himself on the Jags staff as their passing game coordinator. What can he bring to the offense and will he help or hinder the offense that is in flux.
Nick Caley: Houston Texans- Offensive Coordinator
The Houston Texans had a down year despite winning the AFC South. C.J. Stroud threw the ball more then his rookie year yet had less touchdowns and yards. He did however have more interceptions. This led to Bobby Slowik being let go. Nick Caley comes in after stints with both the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams. He spent most of his career dealing with tight ends. Pair that with DeMeco Ryans time spent in San Francisco and we could see Dalton Schultz continue to be a sleeper tight end for fantasy.
Chip Kelly: Las Vegas Raiders- Offensive Coordinator
Chip Kelly makes a surprise return to the NFL. Not as a head coach but as the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders. He brings his face paced, pass friendly offense to a team with no quarterback and very little offensive weapons. Kelly is known for utilizing g scheme over talent to have a potent offense. Paired with head coach Pete Carroll, the Raiders should be a surprise to most. Brock Bowers continues to be a top end fantasy talent but with the pace of play we could see Michael Mayer get more reps and opportunity.
Klayton Adams: Dallas Cowboys- Offensive Coordinator
He might not be the star of the Dallas Cowboys but Klayton Adams brings a lot to the team. While he may not be calling plays Adams will have an impact. With over six years of NFL coaching experience and 20 total he knows how to get the most out of players. Head coach Brain Schottenhiemer will be calling plays but he should rely on Adams to help make the offense hum. Adams has worked a ton with offensive line and running backs so whom ever the Cowboys bring in as their led rusher will benefit from Adams. Dak Prescott should be happy with this hire and it looks signal the want to protect him better.
Doug Nussmeier: New Orleans Saints- Offensive Coordinator
The New Orleans Saints want to turn the team around. They have big dreams and aspirations. What better way to try to achieve those then hiring from the team that just won the Super Bowl. First the Saints hired Kellen Moore from the Philadelphia Eagles. He in turn brough over his quarterback coach Doug Nussmeier.
With the Saints still undecided about their quarterback position and an aging running back in Alvin Kamara I expect them to be a pass friendly offense. Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed should be looked at as one of the top duos in the NFL and potential values in fantasy drafts.
Kevin Patullo: Philadelphia Eagles- Offensive coordinator
When you win the Super Bowl, you lose coaches. It happened to the Eagles back in 2018 where they lost both coordinators and it happened this year where they lost offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and passing game coordinator Doug Nussmeier to the New Orleans Saints.
When you win the Super Bowl you want to keep as much of the team and coaching staff around. If it worked once it should work again. Consistency is what you need not sweeping changes. That is what the Eagles are doing by promoting Kevin Patullo. He spent the past four season with the Eagles and the past seven working with head coach Nick Siriani.
Its an important for Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the rest of the offensive weapons. I expect nothing to change and the offense to remain a juggernaut and the fantasy assets to replicate their 2024 production.
Klay Kubiak: San Francisco 49ers- Offensive Coordinator
The 49ers have not officially had an offensive coordinator since Mike McDaniel in 2021. They now promoted Klay Kubiak into that role for the 2025 season. Kubiak has been wht the team for four years and has benefited from learning from former NFL coaches. This move is intriguing since the offense has been hit or miss. The 49ers only won 6 games last season after dealing with a multitube of injuries.
They will be looking to get back to the double digit win seasons and make a playoff run. For fantasy you can trust Christian McCaffery as a top 3 running back. Brock Purdy is looking for a new contract and Kubiak, who has worked with him the past few years will now be in a place to highlight what Purdy can do. Purdy becomes a sneaky late quarterback play.
Bobby Slowik: Miami Dolphins- senior passing game coordinator
Bobby Slowik was a hot name in coaching hires during the 2024 cycle. He ended staying with the Houston Texans after their surprising 2023 season. The 2024 season was less the stellar and it ended with Slowik being dismissed. There are now numerous reports of him not getting along with players including young quarterback C.J. Stroud. It didn’t take Slowik too long to find a job as he was brought in by the Miami Dolphins. He takes on the role as senior passing game coordinator.
Slowik will work with offensive coordinator Frank Smith to hopefully push the Tua Tagovialoa and the passing game to the next level. There are questions around wide receiver Tyreek Hill and if he will or wants to return to Miami for another season. If Slowik can turn Tua into partly what Stroud was in his rookie year then the he will be a solid fantasy starter.
